Spiritual Direction

“Spiritual direction is a one-on-one relationship organized around prayer and conversation directed toward deepening intimacy with God. Spiritual directors are not experts, nor do they direct. Rather, they journey with others who, like themselves, are committed to the process of spiritual transformation in Christ. And most important, they seek to help those with whom they journey discern the presence and leading of the Spirit of God, the One sent as our true Spiritual Director.” David Benner “Sacred Companions”

Spiritual direction is an ancient practice of the church. For hundreds of years, people have been journeying together on the path God has prepared for their lives. Spiritual direction is about listening to one another. It is about telling our stories. It is about being heard. Douglas Steere said, “To listen another’s soul into a condition of disclosure and discovery may be almost the greatest service that any human being ever performs for another … One can listen someone into existence.”

Thomas Merton wrote, “There is only one problem on which all my existence, my peace and my happiness depend: to discover myself in discovering God. If I find Him I will find myself and if I find my true self I will find Him.” Spiritual direction is about discovering God, ourselves, and eventually others. We do that by learning to be attentive to the work of God in our lives.

Jesus said, “My Father is always working, and so am I” (John 5:17 NLT). Spiritual direction is about noticing that work in our lives.
